In the early 1950s, William J. Levitt and his company Levitt & Sons began mass-producing identical houses in Levittown, Pennsylvania. The homes were simple and small, but they were affordable and allowed families to own their own homes. In order to meet the demand for housing, Levitt & Sons needed to find a way to mass-produce houses quickly and efficiently. They turned to an assembly line production process, which had been used in the auto industry. This process allowed them to produce a house in just six hours.
In order to make the houses even more affordable, Levitt & Sons created a subsidiary company, Levittown Beauty Academy. The Academy offered training in hair styling, cosmetology, and other beauty services. The Academy also operated a beauty salon, which provided services to the residents of Levittown. The Levittown Beauty Academy was one of the first beauty schools in the country, and it trained thousands of women who went on to have careers in the beauty industry.
