About Colorado

Colorado is a state in the western United States. It is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and Arizona to the southwest. Colorado is the 8th most populous state in the United States and the 21st most extensive. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Colorado was 5,695,564 on July 1, 2018, an increase of 13.25% since the 2010 United States Census.

Colorado is known for its diverse geography, which includes alpine mountains, high plains, deserts with huge sand dunes, and deep canyons. The state is famous for its ski resorts, hiking trails, national parks, and monuments. Colorado is one of the Mountain States and is a part of the Western and Southwestern United States.

The capital of Colorado is Denver, which is also the most populous city in the state. The state is named for the Colorado River, which Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. On August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and Arizona to the southwest. The four states of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at one common point, known as the Four Corners, which is the only location in the United States where four states meet.
