About Kentucky

The Commonwealth of Kentucky is a state located in the east south-central region of the United States. Kentucky is the 37th most extensive and the 26th most populous of the 50 United States. It is bordered by Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio to the north; West Virginia and Virginia to the east; Tennessee to the south; and Missouri to the west. The bluegrass region in the central part of the state is the home of Kentucky bluegrass, a species of grass that is commonly used for pasture and hay. The state's capital is Frankfort, and its largest city is Louisville.

Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth. Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 it became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the source of the Kentucky River, which flows westward through the state to the Mississippi River. The river forms part of the state's border with Indiana. The Ohio River forms the northern border with Kentucky, which is across from Cincinnati, Ohio.

During the 19th century, Kentucky was a slave state, but it also had a significant population of free African Americans, who were often educated and owned property. African Americans made up about one-quarter of the state's population before the Civil War. They were excluded from the state's political systems until after the war and emancipation.

In the early 20th century, Kentucky's economy was transformed by the coal industry. The state's economy grew rapidly during World War II, but declined after the war. The coal industry declined in the late 20th century, and the state's economy has diversified.

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race held annually in Louisville on the first Saturday in May. The Derby is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States. It is also the most attended horse race in the world, with over 150,000 people attending in person each year.

Kentucky is known for its bourbon whiskey, which is produced in the state. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a tour of bourbon distilleries in the state. The state is also home to the Kentucky Fried Chicken chain of restaurants, which was founded in the city of Corbin in 1952.
