Stephens College is a women's college located in Columbia, Missouri. It is the second oldest women's college in the United States. Stephens was founded in 1833 as the Columbia Female Academy. In 1856, the name was changed to the Stephens Female College in honor of James H. Stephens, who donated $20,000 to the college. The college was forced to close during the Civil War, but reopened in 1866. In 1870, the college began offering graduate programs, and in 1872, it began offering four-year degrees. In 1909, the name was changed to Stephens College. The college began admitting men in 1971, but reverted to being a women's college in 1974. Stephens offers associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines.
