New Mexico Universities and Colleges


New Mexico is home to a variety of colleges and universities, ranging from the state’s flagship university, the University of New Mexico (UNM), to smaller community colleges, tribal colleges, and private institutions. UNM, located in Albuquerque, is the largest and oldest university in the state. It offers a wide range of academic programs, as well as research and service opportunities, to its over 30,000 students. Other public universities in the state include New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, and Western New Mexico University in Silver City.

New Mexico also has several community colleges, which provide two-year degree programs, certificate programs, and transfer opportunities to four-year universities. These include the Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, the Santa Fe Community College, and the Luna Community College in Las Vegas.

In addition to its public and community colleges, New Mexico also has several private institutions. These include the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, St. John’s College in Santa Fe, and the College of Santa Fe. All three of these private colleges offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

New Mexico also has several tribal colleges, which are operated by the state’s tribal nations. These include Diné College in Tsaile, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, and Navajo Technical University in Crownpoint. These colleges provide educational opportunities to Native American students, focusing on cultural and community-based learning.

The state of New Mexico is home to a wide variety of colleges and universities, offering students the opportunity to pursue higher education in a variety of fields.
