Tennessee Universities and Colleges


Tennessee is home to a wide variety of colleges and universities that offer a variety of educational and career paths for students. From large public universities to small private colleges and community colleges, the state has something for everyone.

The University of Tennessee is the state’s flagship university and is one of the largest public universities in the country. Located in Knoxville, it offers more than 300 programs of study and is a leading research institution. The university also has several satellite campuses, including one in Chattanooga and two in the Nashville area.

Vanderbilt University is a private university located in Nashville. It is known for its top-ranked medical school and its excellent academic programs. Vanderbilt also offers a variety of student activities, including Greek life and a thriving athletics program.

The Tennessee Board of Regents oversees a system of community colleges and technical schools throughout the state. These schools offer two-year degrees and certificates in a variety of fields. They also provide an inexpensive way to get a college education and are often the first step for many students on their way to a four-year degree.

Fisk University is a historically black university located in Nashville. It offers a variety of degree programs, including a well-regarded liberal arts program. Fisk also has a strong emphasis on community service and is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Belmont University is a private university located in Nashville. It is well known for its excellent music and business programs, and it also offers a variety of other degree programs. Belmont is a Christian university and is the home of the renowned Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business.

East Tennessee State University is a public university located in Johnson City. It offers a variety of degree programs, including a well-regarded nursing program. ETSU is also home to a variety of student activities, including a strong Greek life and an active athletics program.

Tennessee is also home to a number of smaller private colleges and universities. These include Rhodes College, Christian Brothers University, and Cumberland University. All of these schools offer a variety of degree programs and have a strong emphasis on student success.
