Missouri Southern State University is a public university located in Joplin, Missouri. The school was founded in 1937 as Joplin Junior College. In 1963, the college became a four-year institution and was renamed Missouri Southern State College. The school attained university status in 2005. Missouri Southern enrolls over 6,000 students from 37 states and 53 countries. The university offers over 70 degree programs. The campus covers 340 acres and features several notable buildings, including the Spiva Center for the Arts and the Billingsly Student Center. Missouri Southern is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The athletic teams are known as the Lions and compete in the NCAA Division II.
