Lindenwood University is a private liberal arts university in St. Charles, Missouri. The university was founded in 1827 by George and Mary Sibley as Lindenwood Academy. The academy was the first educational institution west of the Mississippi River to be accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1834, the academy was renamed Lindenwood College and began offering college-level courses. The college was closed from 1861 to 1865 during the Civil War and reopened in 1866. In 1929, the college was renamed Lindenwood College for Women and began admitting men again in 1969. The university is now made up of five colleges: the College of Arts, Media, and Communications; the College of Business and Entrepreneurship; the College of Education; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; and the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Lindenwood University offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs and has an enrollment of more than 11,000 students.
