It was founded in 1842 by Edward Sorin. The main campus covers 1,261 acres (510 ha) in a suburban setting and it contains a number of recognizable landmarks, such as the Golden Dome, the Word of Life mural (commonly known as Touchdown Jesus), and the Basilica. The school's sports teams are members of the NCAA Division I and are known collectively as the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame is ranked 7th in National Universities, 14th in Best Value Schools, and 35th in Business Programs by U.S. News & World Report in 2019.

Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by the Reverend Edward Sorin, a French priest and educator who had come to the United States two years earlier to spread the word of Catholicism. The university's motto, "Vox Populi, Vox Dei" (Latin for "The Voice of the People, the Voice of God"), was adopted in 1850. The university initially enrolled just over 500 students, all of them male.

The school grew rapidly in the years that followed, adding new programs and departments as it expanded its curriculum. In 1879, the first woman was admitted as a student. In 1882, the university established the School of Law. In 1889, the School of Architecture was founded.

Notre Dame began competing in intercollegiate athletics in 1887, and in 1889, the school joined the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Association (now the Big Ten Conference). The football team soon became one of the school's most popular attractions.

The Golden Dome, completed in 1879, is one of the most recognizable landmarks on campus. It houses the university's main administrative offices, as well as a chapel.

The Word of Life mural, commonly known as Touchdown Jesus, is located on the side of the library and depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched, as if signaling a touchdown.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is the largest church on campus and can seat over 3,000 people. It is open to students of all faiths for prayer and reflection.

Notre Dame is ranked 7th in National Universities, 14th in Best Value Schools, and 35th in Business Programs by U.S. News & World Report in 2019.
