The University of Colorado Boulder (UCB) is a public research university in Boulder, Colorado. It is the flagship university of the University of Colorado system and was founded in 1876, five years before Colorado was admitted to the Union. UC Boulder is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified as an R1 Doctoral University with the highest research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The university's athletic teams, the Buffaloes, compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are members of the Pac-12 Conference. The Buffaloes have won 28 national championships, 20 in skiing, and eight total in men's and women's cross country.
UC Boulder is a large, four-year, residential research university. The university's main campus is located on a 1,600-acre (6.5 km2) site in Boulder, at the base of the Rocky Mountains.
