Troy University is a public university in Troy, Alabama, United States. It was founded on February 10, 1887 as Troy State Normal School within the Alabama State University System by an Act of the Alabama Legislature. It is the flagship university of the Troy University System. It is also the largest of the 27 state-supported institutions of higher learning in Alabama. It is the third oldest public university in Alabama (after the University of Alabama and Auburn University). Troy University is ranked as the 134th best public university in the Southern United States, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school was renamed Troy State Teachers College in 1929, and then Troy State College in 1957. The name was changed again to Troy State University in 1967, and then to its present name in 1998. The university has four campuses: the main campus in Troy, a campus in Montgomery, a campus in Phenix City, and a campus in Dothan. The main campus in Troy is home to the University's College of Arts and Sciences, the Sorrell College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Health and Human Services, and the Honors College. The Montgomery campus is home to the University's School of Nursing and the University's Graduate School. The Phenix City campus is home to the University's Warner Robins Site. The Dothan campus is home to the University's Center for Distance Education. The University also operates a number of extension campuses and sites across the state of Alabama, including the eTroy Online Campus. The University offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including over 40 online programs. The University is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and competes in NCAA Division I athletics.
