The University of the South, also known as Sewanee, is a private university located in Sewanee, Tennessee. It is owned by 28 southern dioceses of the Episcopal Church. The university's school colors are purple and gold, and its sports teams are known as the Tigers. The university was founded in 1857 by bishops of the Episcopal Church as a seminary to train clergy for the church. It now comprises a college of liberal arts and sciences, a school of theology, and a school of medicine. The university's campus is located on 13,000 acres of land atop the Cumberland Plateau, and its buildings are constructed in the Gothic style.
