The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is a public research university in Knoxville, Tennessee. Founded in 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state, it is the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system and a land-grant university. It hosts more than 28,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

The university's athletic program, nicknamed the Volunteers or Vols, is a member of the Southeastern Conference. The football team has won six national championships and 17 conference championships. The men's basketball team has won two national championships and appeared in the NCAA tournament 27 times. The women's basketball team has won eight national championships and appeared in the NCAA tournament 21 times.

The university is home to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, the largest teaching hospital in the state. The medical center includes the only Level I trauma center and Level IV neonatal intensive care unit in the region. The university is also home to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the largest Department of Energy research facility in the country.

The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is a comprehensive research university with more than 150 research centers and institutes. The university's research expenditures totaled $542 million in FY 2016, ranking it 47th among public universities and 96th among all universities in the United States. The university is also home to the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the nation's premier nonpartisan public policy center.

The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctorate degrees.
