Texas Southern University (TSU) is a public research university in Houston, Texas. The university is one of the largest historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States and the only one in Texas. TSU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

The university was established in 1927 as the Houston Junior College. It became a four-year institution in 1934 and was renamed Houston College for Negroes. In 1946, the state of Texas assumed control of the school and renamed it Texas State University for Negroes. In 1951, the school was renamed Texas Southern University.

The university has an enrollment of over 9,000 students. The campus covers 150 acres (61 ha) in the Houston Museum District and is adjacent to the University of Houston. The school offers bachelor's degrees in over 50 areas of study and master's degrees in 22 areas of study.

Texas Southern University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's and master's degrees. The school is also a member of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church.

The university is home to the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, the only law school in Houston. The school also has a School of Public Affairs and a College of Education.

The sports teams at TSU are known as the Tigers. The university is a member of the NCAA Division I and competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Tigers football team has won nine conference championships and made one appearance in the Bayou Classic. The Tigers basketball team has won four conference championships and made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

Texas Southern University was founded in 1927 as Houston Junior College. In 1934, the institution attained four-year status and was renamed Houston College for Negroes. Twelve years later, the Texas Legislature designated the school a state college and changed its name to Texas State University for Negroes. In 1947, the legislature transformed it into a state university, and in 1951, the name was changed to Texas Southern University.

The school's mission is to meet the challenges of a global society by offering high-quality, affordable educational opportunities and programs that prepare a diverse population of students to participate and excel in an increasingly complex world.

The School of Public Affairs offers bachelor's and master's degrees in public administration and public policy. The school also offers a Ph.D. in urban education policy.

The College of Education offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in education. The college also offers a Ph.D. in educational administration.
