Tennessee Wesleyan University is a small, private, liberal arts university located in Athens, Tennessee, United States. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university offers bachelor's degrees in over 30 majors and concentrations, and master's degrees in education and business administration. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The university was founded in 1857 as Athens Female Academy. In 1889, the school was renamed Tennessee Wesleyan College and began admitting men. In 1925, the college was renamed again to its current name, Tennessee Wesleyan University. The university has an enrollment of approximately 1,400 students.
The university's athletics teams are nicknamed the Bulldogs and compete in the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference. The university fields teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The university's men's basketball team won the NAIA National Championship in 1984.
