Talladega College is a historically black college in Talladega, Alabama. Founded in 1867, the college is one of the oldest and most prestigious black colleges in the United States. The college is known for its rigorous academic programs, its commitment to social justice, and its alumni, which include some of the most prominent black leaders in American history.
Talladega College was founded by a group of former slaves who had been freed after the American Civil War. The college's mission was to provide a quality education to black Americans who had been denied access to education during slavery. The college's first president was William J. Shelby, a former slave who had been educated at Oberlin College.
The college grew rapidly in its early years, and by the early 1900s, it was one of the largest and most respected black colleges in the country. The college was a leader in the civil rights movement, and its alumni included some of the most important black leaders of the 20th century, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and Fred Shuttlesworth.
