Stephen F. Austin State University is a public university in Nacogdoches, Texas. Founded in 1921 as a teachers' college, the university has an enrollment of over 12,000 students. It is one of four independent public universities in Texas and is a member of the Texas State University System. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate degrees and 60 graduate degrees through 10 colleges and schools.
The school was founded in 1921 as a teachers' college. It became a four-year institution in 1925 and was renamed Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College. In 1946, the school was renamed again to Stephen F. Austin State College. It attained university status in 1969 and took its current name in 1972.
The university is located in the piney woods of East Texas in the city of Nacogdoches. The city is the county seat of Nacogdoches County and is situated about halfway between Dallas and Houston.
The university's 1,600-acre (6.5 km2) campus is one of the largest in Texas. It includes more than 50 buildings, including the Steen Library, which is the fourth largest academic library in the state.
The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is also a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Texas Association of Colleges and Universities.
The university's athletic teams, nicknamed the Lumberjacks, compete in NCAA Division I. The school's football team has competed in the Football Championship Subdivision since 1981. The school's men's basketball team has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
