The university was founded in 1906 as Wesleyan Bible and Missionary Training Institute by the Wesleyan Methodist Connection. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees. The university's athletic teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as members of the Mid-South Conference.
