Founded in 1896, South Carolina State University is a public, historically black university located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. South Carolina State University was founded as a land-grant college for African Americans. The university's founders were African American leaders who believed that education was essential for the advancement of the African American community. The university's first president was Dr. William D. Cunningham, who served from 1896 to 1902. Under Dr. Cunningham's leadership, the university developed a strong academic program and began to offer degrees in a variety of disciplines.
In the early years of the university, the campus was located on a former plantation. The university's first buildings were constructed by African American laborers. As the university grew, new buildings were constructed, including a library, a gymnasium, and a dormitory.
The university's enrollment increased dramatically in the early twentieth century, as African Americans from across the country sought higher education. In 1923, the university's name was changed to South Carolina State College. The college continued to grow in the following years, and in 1954 it was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
In the 1960s, South Carolina State College became a focal point of the Civil Rights Movement. African American students at the college participated in sit-ins and other protests to fight for equality. The college also played a role in the desegregation of public schools in South Carolina.
In 1963, the college's name was changed to South Carolina State University. The university continued to grow in the following years, and today it is a comprehensive institution with an enrollment of over 5000 students. The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, and its campus is home to a number of research centers.
