Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT), formerly Rose Polytechnic Institute, is a private engineering and science college in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is the oldest polytechnic institute in the United States and one of only five in the country. The school offers bachelor's and master's degrees in science, engineering, and mathematics.

Founded in 1874, Rose Polytechnic Institute was the first private engineering college in the United States. The school was founded by Chauncey Rose and John A. Wood, two Terre Haute businessmen. The two men wanted to provide an education in science and engineering that would be accessible to the working class.

The school began with just two faculty members and twelve students. The curriculum focused on mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The first class graduated in 1878.

In 1917, the school changed its name to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to reflect its expanded curriculum. The school began offering bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Today, Rose-Hulman enrolls over 2,000 students from all 50 states and over 40 countries. The school offers over 50 undergraduate and graduate programs in science, engineering, and mathematics. Rose-Hulman is consistently ranked among the top engineering schools in the United States.
