The history of Prairie View A&M University is reflective of the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in the United States. The university was founded in 1876, just a few years after the end of the American Civil War, as the Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College for Colored Youth. The college was established as a land-grant college under the Morrill Act, which was passed by Congress in 1862 to provide educational opportunities for all Americans, regardless of race.
The college struggled in its early years, as it was underfunded and had to contend with the Jim Crow laws that were enacted in the South after the Civil War. Despite these challenges, the college was able to persevere and grow, and in 1979, the legislature renamed the school Prairie View A&M University.
