Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is a public university in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Founded in 1911 as a normal school, MTSU is the largest undergraduate university in the state of Tennessee and is one of the state's eight public universities. It is also the largest single-campus university in the state. The university has over 250 degree programs.

MTSU was founded in 1911 as Middle Tennessee Normal School, a two-year institution for training teachers. The school underwent a number of name changes over the years as it expanded its mission and programs, becoming Middle Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, Middle Tennessee State College in 1965, and finally Middle Tennessee State University in 1965. The school began offering four-year degrees in 1957 and graduate degrees in 1961.

MTSU is located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Nashville. The university's main campus consists of over 500 acres (2.0 km2) of land. The campus is home to over 100 buildings, including academic buildings, residence halls, athletic facilities, and administrative offices.

MTSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The university's athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I.

MTSU offers over 250 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is organized into eight colleges: Basic and Applied Sciences, Business, Education, Behavioral and Health Sciences, Humanities, Fine Arts, and Media and Entertainment Arts.

MTSU is home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Center for Archaeological Research, the Center for Popular Music, and the Institute for Intelligent Systems. The university also operates a number of off-campus facilities, including the Oakley Agricultural Research Center, the Percy Priest Lake Field Laboratory, and the Albert Gore Research Center.

MTSU has a student body of over 24,000, the majority of whom are undergraduates. The university's student-to-faculty ratio is 18:1.
