Meharry Medical College is a private, historically black college located in Nashville, Tennessee. The school was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College. It became an independent institution in 1915 and was renamed Meharry Medical College in 1916. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is the largest private, historically black college in the United States. The college offers degrees in medicine, dentistry, and public health. Meharry Medical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college's alumni include two Nobel laureates, four surgeons general of the United States, and numerous other notable physicians, dentists, and scientists.
