MUSC was founded in 1824 as the Medical College of South Carolina by Dr. John L. Rutledge, a signer of the United States Constitution and the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The college was privately owned and operated until 1850, when it was taken over by the state of South Carolina. The school was closed during the Civil War and reopened in 1865. In 1893, the college became a part of the University of South Carolina system and was renamed the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. In 1913, the name was changed to the Medical University of South Carolina.
