Martin University is a private, historically black university in Indianapolis, Indiana. The university was founded in 1977 by Dr. James E. Walker, Sr. and Dr. Thomas L. Kilgore, Sr. as a two-year institution. It was named after the late Dr. T.R.M. Howard, a civil rights leader, surgeon, and entrepreneur from Mississippi. The university was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1984 and began offering four-year degrees in 1986. In 2002, the university's name was changed from Martin Luther King, Jr. University to Martin University.
Martin University has a total enrollment of 1,086 students, of which 886 are undergraduates and 200 are graduate students. The university offers bachelor's degrees in business administration, criminal justice, elementary education, English, history, psychology, and sociology, and master's degrees in business administration, education, and counseling. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and competes in the Mid-Central College Conference (MCC).
The university's campus is located on the near east side of Indianapolis. The campus consists of 14 buildings on 25 acres (10 hectares) of land. The university also owns a farm in Shelbyville, Indiana, which is used for research and educational purposes.
Martin University's mission is to provide "quality education to a diverse student population in an environment that is nurturing, challenging, and supportive." The university's motto is "Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve."
