Limestone University is a private university in Gaffney, South Carolina. The university was founded in 1845 as Limestone College by Thomas Curtis and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. It was the first women's college in South Carolina and one of the first in the United States. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and competes in the Carolinas Conference. The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines.
Limestone University was founded in 1845 as Limestone College by Thomas Curtis, a local Presbyterian minister. The college was originally located in a two-story building in downtown Gaffney. The building housed a chapel, classrooms, and a dining room. The college's first students were six women who enrolled in the fall of 1845. The college's charter was approved by the South Carolina Legislature in 1846, making it the first women's college in the state and one of the first in the United States.
In the early years, the college struggled financially and was often on the verge of closing. In 1854, the college was saved from bankruptcy by a group of local businessmen who organized a stock company and purchased the college's assets. The college continued to operate in downtown Gaffney until the early 1900s, when it began to experience growth and expansion.
In the early 1900s, the college added several new buildings, including a library, a gymnasium, and a dormitory. The college also began to offer a wider range of academic programs. In 1925, the college was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In the 1930s, the college experienced a period of growth and expansion under the leadership of President James A. B. Scherer. In the 1940s, the college began to experience financial difficulties due to the effects of the Great Depression and World War II. In 1947, the college was forced to close its doors for two years.
