Furman University is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university in Greenville, South Carolina. Founded in 1826, Furman enrolls approximately 2,700 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students. The university is a member of the NCAA Division I Southern Conference. It is the oldest and largest private institution in South Carolina. Furman is a selective university, with an acceptance rate of 32%. The university has an endowment of $1.6 billion, the largest of any private university in South Carolina. The school was named for Richard Furman of Charleston, a clergyman considered to be the father of the Southern Baptist Convention. Furman Academy and Theological Institution, the first school in South Carolina to offer higher education to men, was established by the Baptist Church in 1826. The school moved to its current location in downtown Greenville in 1851. In 1859, the school was renamed Furman University. The Civil War led to the closure of the university from 1865 to 1868. During the Reconstruction era, the university was one of nine all-male institutions in the South that remained open. In 1876, Furman was one of the first schools in the nation to institute a honor code to enforce student discipline. In 1900, the university began offering graduate education. In 1924, the university became a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of the nation's leading research universities. In the 1960s and 1970s, Furman began to admit black students. In 1988, the university became coeducational. Furman is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a variety of disciplines. The university is home to the Paladins, a Division I athletics program. The university's colors are purple and white. The school mascot is a Paladin.
