Francis Marion University is a public university in Florence, South Carolina. It is named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. The university is a member of the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU).
The university was founded in 1970 as Florence-Darlington Technical College, a two-year institution. In 1974, the college became a four-year institution and was renamed Francis Marion College, after the Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina. In 1992, the college was renamed Francis Marion University.
The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines. The bachelor's degree programs include business administration, education, nursing, and liberal arts. The master's degree programs include business administration, education, and nursing.
