Converse College is a private women's college in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Founded in 1889, Converse is one of the oldest women's colleges in the United States. Converse College was founded in 1889 by Dr. James Benjamin Converse, a Presbyterian minister, and his wife, Anna Woodward Converse. The Converse family had a long history of involvement in higher education; Dr. Converse's grandfather, Benjamin Converse, was a founder of Davidson College, and his father, James Converse, was a trustee of both Davidson and Erskine College. The Conversees were also active in the education of women; Anna Converse's sister, Sarah Woodward, was a founder of the Woodward School for Girls in Charleston, South Carolina.
The Conversees' goal in founding Converse College was to provide women with a liberal arts education that would enable them to lead productive and fulfilling lives. The college's motto, "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister," reflects this commitment. Converse was one of the first women's colleges in the United States to offer a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum.
