Colorado State University-Fort Collins is a public research university located in Fort Collins, in the U.S. state of Colorado. The university is the state's land-grant university and the flagship university of the Colorado State University System. The current enrollment is approximately 32,000 students, including resident and non-resident undergraduate students and about 1,800 graduate students.
The university has approximately 1,500 faculty in eight colleges and 55 academic departments. Bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees are offered in 150 fields of study through 13 schools and colleges at CSU-Fort Collins. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Colorado State University is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." CSU was founded as the Colorado Agricultural College in 1870, six years before the Colorado Territory gained statehood. It was one of 68 land-grant colleges established under the Morrill Act of 1862. The Colorado Agricultural College became a land-grant college in 1879. Five years later it was renamed Colorado State University. It was renamed Colorado State University in 1957.
The main campus of the university is located on 583 acres (237 ha) of land in central Fort Collins. The first building on the site was Old Main, which is now the centerpiece of the CSU Historic District. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
CSU offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Mountain West Conference. CSU's main campus houses the majority of the university's classrooms, research facilities, and administrative buildings, while the Foothills Campus houses the university's veterinary teaching hospital, and the Mountain Campus is the site of the university's agricultural operations.
The university has the nation's seventh-largest veterinary teaching hospital, as well as the largest university-affiliated veterinary clinic in the world. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital sees over 54,000 patient visits a year, and provides a wide range of services including preventative care, diagnostic services, surgical services, and emergency and critical care. The hospital is staffed by more than 300 faculty and staff, and is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association.
The university's agricultural operations are based at the Mountain Campus, located about 10 miles (16 km) south of the main campus. The Mountain Campus is home to the CSU Equine Center, which is one of the largest equine teaching and research facilities in the world. The Equine Center houses more than 100 horses of various breeds, and offers a wide range of services including teaching, research, and therapeutic riding.
