Citadel Military College of South Carolina is a public college in Charleston, South Carolina. It is one of six Senior Military Colleges in the United States and is known for its strict military lifestyle. The Citadel has been ranked the #1 Public College in the South by U.S. News & World Report and is also ranked as a Top 10 Best Value Public College by Kiplinger's Personal Finance.
The Citadel was founded in 1842 by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly. The college originally served as a military academy for the state of South Carolina and the Confederate States of America. The Citadel Academy officially opened its doors on July 1, 1843, with ten cadets in attendance. The Citadel's first class graduated in 1847.
The Citadel is currently home to about 2,300 cadets, who are divided into four classes: the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, the Citadel Graduate College, the Evening Undergraduate Program, and the Citadel Graduate College of Online and Evening Studies. The South Carolina Corps of Cadets is the military lifestyle program at The Citadel and is based on the premise that "discipline produces leaders." The Corps of Cadets is made up of about 1,900 cadets, who live in The Citadel's six barracks and follow a strict daily schedule. The Citadel Graduate College is a coeducational program that offers master's degrees in business administration, education, engineering, and nursing. The Evening Undergraduate Program is a degree completion program for working adults. The Citadel Graduate College of Online and Evening Studies offers online and evening courses for working adults and military personnel.
The Citadel is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's and master's degrees. The Citadel's engineering program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The Citadel's business program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The Citadel's nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
The Citadel is a member of the NCAA Division I FCS and competes in the Southern Conference. The Citadel Bulldogs football team has won 11 conference championships and has appeared in the FCS playoffs 11 times. The Citadel Bulldogs basketball team has won 3 conference championships and has appeared in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament 3 times. The Citadel Bulldogs baseball team has won 10 conference championships and has appeared in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament 11 times.
