Founded in 1871, Christian Brothers University is a private Catholic university in Memphis, Tennessee. CBU is a Lasallian institution, and it is one of the only Lasallian universities in the United States. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. CBU offers bachelor's degrees in over 30 majors, as well as master's degrees in business, education, engineering, and nursing. The university's athletic teams, the Buccaneers, compete in NCAA Division II.
CBU was founded by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, a Catholic religious order, in 1871. The university was originally located in downtown Memphis, but it moved to its current location in the Midtown neighborhood in 1925. In the early 20th century, CBU began offering graduate and professional degrees, and in the 1970s, the university began admitting women. Today, CBU enrolls over 2,000 students from over 30 states and 20 countries.
CBU's campus is located on a 100-acre site in Midtown Memphis. The campus includes several academic and administrative buildings, as well as residence halls, a student center, a library, and athletic facilities. CBU's academic programs are housed in the Plough Library and the Buckman Hall of Science and Engineering. The university's business programs are located in the Buckman School of Business, and the nursing programs are located in the School of Nursing.
CBU's athletic teams, the Buccaneers, compete in NCAA Division II. The university offers a variety of intramural and club sports, as well as fitness and wellness programs.
CBU is committed to serving the Memphis community. The university's Center for Service and Learning coordinates CBU's community service initiatives, and the university's Bonner Scholars program provides financial assistance and support to students who perform community service. CBU also operates a free clinic, which provides medical and dental care to the uninsured and underserved in the Memphis community.
