Butler University is a private university in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1855 in response to the old Indiana University's decision to no longer admit students from the state of Indiana, Butler University is the oldest private university in the state of Indiana. The university consists of six colleges: College of Business, College of Communication, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Jordan College of the Arts, and Lacy School of Business. The university offers more than 60 majors and 100 areas of study.

Butler University's campus is located just north of downtown Indianapolis, on 46 acres (19 ha) of land. The main campus includes academic and residential buildings, as well as athletic facilities. The university also owns and operates a 1,200-acre (490 ha) nature preserve, Butler University Outdoor Center, in nearby Hancock County.

The university is a member of the NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference. Its sports teams are known as the Butler Bulldogs. The men's basketball team has appeared in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament 28 times, winning the tournament in 1941 and making back-to-back appearances in the national championship game in 2010 and 2011. The women's basketball team has also made several appearances in the NCAA tournament, most recently in 2019.

Founded in 1855 as Indiana's first private college, Butler University is today a comprehensive, national university enrolling more than 4,500 undergraduate and graduate students in six colleges: Arts, Business, Communication, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Butler's beautiful, wooded, 46-acre campus is just north of downtown Indianapolis and within easy reach of all the city has to offer. The city's cultural, entertainment, and business districts are just minutes away, and Indianapolis International Airport is a short 15-minute drive.

Butler is known for its rigorous academic programs, outstanding faculty, and commitment to preparing students for successful careers and lives of leadership and service. The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Butler offers more than 60 majors leading to bachelor's degrees, as well as master's degrees in business, education, and liberal arts, and a doctor of pharmacy degree.

Butler is one of just a handful of universities in the nation with a comprehensive arts conservatory on its campus. The Jordan College of the Arts offers bachelor's and master's degrees in art, dance, music, and theatre.

The University's athletic teams, known as the Butler Bulldogs, compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference. The men's basketball team has made 28 appearances in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament, most recently in 2019, and has won the tournament once, in 1941. The women's basketball team has also made several appearances in the NCAA tournament, most recently in 2019.
