Alabama State University is a public, historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama. The university was founded in 1867 as the Lincoln Normal School of Alabama, a school for training teachers. In 1934, the school became a four-year institution and was renamed the Alabama State Teachers College. In 1957, the name was changed again to Alabama State College, and in 1969 the school attained university status and became Alabama State University. Today, the university enrolls over 5,000 students in over 50 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
