Alabama A & M University is a public, historically black university located in Normal, Alabama, United States. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Alabama A & M was established in 1875 by an act of the Alabama State Legislature. The university began offering classes in 1876 with an initial enrollment of nine students. The university's name was changed to Normal Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1878 and then to Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1919. In 1948, the name was changed to Alabama A & M College. The school was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1957. Alabama A & M became a land-grant institution in 1980. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a variety of disciplines.

Alabama A & M offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees through five colleges and schools: the College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Sciences; the College of Business; the College of Education; the College of Engineering, Technology, and Physical Sciences; and the School of Graduate Studies and Research. The university's main campus covers more than 500 acres and includes over 70 buildings. Alabama A & M also operates a 2,000-acre experimental farm and a forest Reserve.

The university's athletics teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference. Alabama A & M's football team has won eight conference championships and made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The university's men's basketball team has won four conference championships and made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. Other sports offered at Alabama A & M include baseball, softball, track and field, and golf.
