Founded in 1883, Jacksonville State University is a public university located in Jacksonville, Alabama, United States. The school is a member of the University of Alabama System and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Jacksonville State University is home to a number of research institutes and centers, including the Center for Applied Optics, the Center for Advanced Science and Engineering, and the Center for Economic Development. The school's athletics teams, known as the Gamecocks, compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Ohio Valley Conference. The university's marching band, the Marching Southerners, is one of the largest and most acclaimed collegiate marching bands in the country.
