Indiana State University is a public university in Terre Haute, Indiana. Founded in 1865, it is the flagship institution of the Indiana State University system and the largest university in the Wabash Valley. The university's athletic teams are known as the Sycamores and compete in NCAA Division I.

Indiana State University was established by the Indiana General Assembly on December 20, 1865, making it the state's oldest public university. The school's original mission was to educate Indiana's teachers and other professional school personnel. Today, that mission has expanded to include preparing students for a wide range of careers in a variety of fields.

The university is organized into eight colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Nursing, the College of Technology, and the Graduate School. Indiana State offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate programs.

The university's main campus is located on the north side of Terre Haute's downtown district. The 200-acre (81 ha) campus is home to more than 60 buildings, including the Center for Performing and Visual Arts, the Clabber Girl Museum, and the ISU Planetarium.

Indiana State University is a member of the NCAA Division I and the Missouri Valley Conference. The university's athletic teams are known as the Sycamores and compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, and volleyball.

Indiana State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public universities in the Midwest. The university's alumni include several notable individuals, such as former Indiana Governor Evan Bayh, former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton, and former NFL quarterback Trent Green.
