East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a public university located in Johnson City, Tennessee. The university is part of the Tennessee Board of Regents system and offers over 140 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

ETSU was founded in 1911 as East Tennessee Normal School, a two-year teachers' training school. The school became East Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, and East Tennessee State College in 1943. The school was granted university status in 1963 and its name was changed to East Tennessee State University.

ETSU's main campus is located on a 200-acre (0.81 km2) site in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The campus is home to over 12,000 students, as well as a faculty of over 800. The university also operates a satellite campus in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

ETSU is divided into six colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Technology, the College of Education, the College of Nursing, the College of Public Health, and the Honors College. The university offers over 140 undergraduate and graduate programs, including doctorates in education, nursing, and public health.

ETSU is home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, the Center for Rural Health and Education, the Institute for Sport and Leisure Studies, and the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing. The university is also home to the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, which is affiliated with the Mountain States Health Alliance.

ETSU is a member of the NCAA Division I and competes in the Southern Conference. The university's athletic teams, known as the Buccaneers, include men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field. The university also has a marching band and a cheerleading squad.

ETSU is committed to serving the region in which it is located. The university offers a number of programs and services designed to improve the quality of life in the region, including the ETSU Center for Rural Health and the ETSU College of Business and Technology Small Business Development Center. The university also operates a number of outreach programs, including the ETSU Extension Service and the ETSU Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education.
