Cumberland University is a private university in Lebanon, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1842, though the current incarnation was first established in 1847. The university is a member of the Tennessee Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Cumberland University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The university's sports teams are known as the Phoenix. Cumberland University was founded in 1842 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The university's name was inspired by the Cumberland River, which runs through the city of Lebanon. The university was originally located in McMinnville, Tennessee, but was moved to Lebanon in 1847.

Cumberland University was closed during the American Civil War, but was reopened in 1865. The university was closed again in 1871, but was reopened in 1874. In 1878, the university was moved to its current location in Lebanon.
