Willamette University is a private university in Salem, Oregon. Founded in 1842, it is the oldest university in the state and the first university established west of the Rocky Mountains. The university is a member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The university's motto is "Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory."
Willamette has an undergraduate student body of approximately 2,000 students. The university offers bachelor's degrees in over 30 majors and is organized into four colleges: the College of Liberal Arts, the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, the College of Education, and the College of Law. Willamette University was founded in 1842 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1853, the university became the first in the West to grant a woman a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1867, the university began admitting women on an equal basis with men.
