Widener University is a private university in Chester, Pennsylvania. The university was founded in 1821 as The Bullock School for Boys in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1832, the school was renamed The Alumni Academy of Delaware. In 1846, the academy moved to Chester, Pennsylvania, and was renamed The Chester County Alumni Academy. In 1853, the academy was renamed Widener College. In 1876, the college was renamed Widener University. The university is named after George Widener, who was a member of the university's Board of Trustees from 1876 to his death in 1915.

Widener University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs in four schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Engineering, and the School of Law. The university's main campus is located in Chester, Pennsylvania, on a 107-acre site. The campus includes seven academic buildings, two residence halls, a student center, a library, an athletic complex, and a performing arts center. The university also has two satellite campuses: one in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and one in Wilmington, Delaware.

Widener University is a member of the Association of American Universities, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, the Council of Independent Colleges, and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is also a member of the Philadelphia Big 5, a group of five colleges and universities in Philadelphia that compete against each other in athletic events.
