The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) is a public land-grant university located in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. It is the second-largest university in Puerto Rico and the only public university in the west coast of the island. Founded in 1911, it is the third-oldest university in Puerto Rico. UPRM is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and it offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in a wide variety of disciplines.
The university is organized into eleven academic units: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Agricultural and Mechanical Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the School of Architecture, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the Graduate School, and the School of Continuing Education and Professional Studies.
UPRM's main campus is located in the city of Mayagüez, on the west coast of Puerto Rico. The campus occupies an area of approximately 190 acres (0.77 km2) and is adjacent to the Mayagüez Zoo and the Botanical Garden of Mayagüez. The campus is also home to the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Museum of Natural History.
UPRM offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The most popular undergraduate programs are in the fields of business, engineering, and education. The most popular graduate programs are in the fields of business, engineering, and education.
UPRM is a research-intensive university and is home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Center for Applied Technologies, the Center for Environmental Studies, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, the Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Studies, and the Puerto Rico Seismic Network. The university is also home to the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.
UPRM is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an organization of the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada. It is also a member of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), an organization of more than 500 institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada that award graduate degrees.
