The University of Pennsylvania (commonly known as Penn or UPenn) is a private Ivy League research university located in the University City section of Philadelphia. Penn is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, and considers itself the first university in the United States with both undergraduate and graduate studies.
Penn offers a broad range of academic programs, including arts and sciences, business, dentistry, education, engineering and applied science, nursing, medicine, and social policy and practice. Its undergraduate program is the 12th oldest in the United States and the university is also home to the first medical school in the United States.
The university has produced many notable alumni, including three Founding Fathers of the United States, nine Supreme Court Justices, 20 living billionaires, and many heads of state. With an endowment of $13.8 billion, Penn is the seventh-wealthiest private university in the United States.
Penn's athletic teams, collectively known as the Quakers, compete in the NCAA Division I as members of the Ancient Eight. They are one of the few Ivy League schools with an NCAA Division I FBS football team.
