The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a public university in Cedar Falls, Iowa. UNI offers more than 90 majors across the colleges of Business Administration, Education, Humanities, Arts, and Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The university is Iowa's third-largest public university and the largest employer in the Cedar Valley region.

UNI was founded as the Iowa State Normal School in 1876, two years after the state of Iowa was admitted to the Union. The school was created to train teachers for the state's public schools. The first classes were held in 1878 with an enrollment of 27 students. The school was renamed the Iowa State Teachers College in 1909 and the Iowa State College of Education in 1961. In 1967, the college was renamed the University of Northern Iowa.

UNI is known for its strong programs in education, business, and the sciences. The university is home to the National Swine Research and Information Center, the Iowa Informatics Initiative, and the Center for Energy & Environmental Education. UNI is also a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), a group of 62 leading public and private research universities in the United States and Canada.

UNI is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Missouri Valley Conference.
