The University of New Orleans, often referred to locally as UNO, is a medium-sized public urban university located on the New Orleans lakefront within New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. It is a member of the University of Louisiana System and the Urban 13 association. Founded in 1958, the University of New Orleans was established as a separate and independent institution through the efforts of the late Louisiana senator Russell B. Long, as well as the late New Orleans mayor Victor H. Schiro. UNO's charter was approved by the Louisiana Legislature in 1974.
The University of New Orleans is one of the nation's leading urban public research universities. It is also a vibrant center for education, the arts, and recreation. The university is committed to expanding access to higher education and to providing a quality education to a diverse student body.
The University of New Orleans offers a wide variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. UNO is also home to a number of research centers and institutes, as well as the Louisiana Business and Technology Center.
