The University of Louisville (UofL) is a public university in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a member of the Kentucky state university system. Founded in 1798, it is the oldest city-owned public university in the United States and one of the first universities established west of the Appalachian Mountains. The university is categorized as an R1 Doctoral University with "Highest Research Activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The university has three campuses within the city of Louisville and serves as the flagship institution of the Kentucky state university system. The main campus is located on Belknap Campus in the University of Louisville neighborhood south of downtown Louisville. It comprises more than 150 buildings on 492 acres (2.00 km2) of land. The Health Sciences Center is located on the eastern edge of the main campus in the University of Louisville Hospital complex. The Belknap Campus is also home to the Speed School of Engineering, which is the nation's second-oldest engineering school.
The university also operates two satellite campuses. The Shelby Campus is located in eastern Louisville in the Shelby Park neighborhood and houses the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences. The downtown Louisville campus, which is located in the historic Clifton neighborhood, is home to the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
The university offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its 11 schools and colleges. The University of Louisville School of Medicine is the largest school at the university with more than 700 students. The University of Louisville School of Dentistry is the second-largest school with more than 400 students. The University of Louisville School of Nursing is the third-largest school with more than 300 students.
The University of Louisville is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees.
