The University of Iowa is a public research university in Iowa City, Iowa. Founded in 1847, it is the oldest and the second largest university in the state. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is categorized as an R1 Doctoral Research University in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Iowa is also a member of the Universities Research Association, a consortium of the nation's leading research universities. The university is known for its research in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, as well as its highly ranked programs in medicine, law, and business.
