The University of Arizona (UA) is a public research university in Tucson, Arizona. Founded in 1885, the UA was the first university in the Arizona Territory. The university operates two medical schools and is affiliated with the region's only academic medical center. The university is also home to the James E. Rogers College of Law and numerous other highly ranked graduate and professional schools. The university has an annual economic impact of over $8 billion and is one of the largest employers in the state of Arizona, with over 10,000 faculty and staff.
The University of Arizona is one of the elected members of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an organization of the nation's leading research universities. The university is also classified as a Research I university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The University of Arizona is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The university's athletic teams, the Arizona Wildcats, compete in the Pac-12 Conference of the NCAA. The Wildcats are particularly noted for their success in men's basketball, winning the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament in 1997 and again in 2001. The football team has also competed in the Fiesta Bowl, the Rose Bowl, and the Holiday Bowl.
