Tulane University of Louisiana, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a private research university founded in 1834. The university is organized into 10 schools: the School of Architecture, the A. B. Freeman School of Business, the School of Law, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the School of Science and Engineering, the School of Social Work, and the Tulane University School of Continuing Studies. Tulane is a member of the Association of American Universities and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The university is ranked as the 53rd best university in the United States and the second best university in Louisiana by U.S. News & World Report.
Tulane was founded by a group of New Orleans businessmen and French Creole gentlemen led by Paul Tulane, a wealthy merchant from New York City. The university was originally established as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834. The school was renamed Tulane University in 1884 in honor of its founder. The university moved to its current Uptown campus in 1894.
Tulane is one of the most selective universities in the United States, with an acceptance rate of 15.8%. The university enrolls approximately 8,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students from all 50 states and over 60 countries. Tulane is a research university, with over $200 million in research expenditures annually. The university is affiliated with several hospitals, including Tulane Medical Center, New Orleans' only Level 1 trauma center.
