Founded in 1866 as Maryland's first private normal school, Towson University is now the largest public university in Maryland and the second-largest university in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The university's main campus covers more than 340 acres (1.4 km2) just north of Baltimore's Inner Harbor and just south of the Baltimore County seat of Towson.

Towson University was founded in 1866 as Maryland's first private normal school. The school was renamed the Maryland State Normal School at Towson in 1867 and became part of the Maryland public school system in 1907. In 1963, the name was changed to Towson State Teachers College, and in 1976, the school became Towson State University. The university became part of the University System of Maryland in 1988 and was renamed Towson University in 1997.
